The Fish pepper plant is productive and produces high yields of these brilliant fruits, very easy to grow in gardens and containers, and beautiful with their pretty variegated leaves and colorful pods. The Fish Hot Pepper is like no other as it has a beautiful ripening stage as it starts off a creamy white color, changing into a light green with dark green stripes and markings, to a vibrant orange with dark red and brown streaks.

Traditionally, the peppers came from Baltimore, with a unique history as it is said to date back to the 1800s when African American caterers used Fish Peppers to make white paprika for their cream sauces for fish and shellfish dishes. The pepper was kept as a secret ingredient in these dishes and its part in recipes were handed down orally.

The famous African American painter, Horace Pippin, shared this variety with H. Ralph Weaver in the early 1940s in exchange for bee-sting therapy. Weaver's grandson found the seeds in a baby food jar in his grandmother's deep freezer a couple decades later, many years after his grandfather's death. We are honored to be able to offer this endangered heritage seed variety.
